During the reigns of Emperor Kangxi to Emperor Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty, this place served as the examination venue for candidates from eight counties under the jurisdiction of Yangzhou, including Jiangdu, Ganquan, Yizheng, Baoying, Gaoyou, Xinghua, Taizhou, and Dongtai, hence it is also known as the ‘Yang Prefecture Examination Hall’. The Xuezheng Examination Hall is one of the few well-preserved examination halls in the province, with historical value comparable to the Nanjing Imperial Examination Hall, and it serves as a physical testament to China’s imperial examination system.
The hall has been restored to its former glory, including the restoration of buildings such as the Chui Gu Ting, Yi Men, examination cells, the main hall, upper rooms, and the eastern and western buildings. The renovated Yang Prefecture Examination Hall presents a combination of artifacts, images, and scenes to showcase six aspects of the imperial examination system in China: the culture of the imperial examinations, a brief history of the examinations, the trials of the Xuezheng Academy, the education within the examination system, famous Taizhou figures, and curious stories about the examinations. It covers the imperial examination system, procedures, evolution, admission rates, and social significance.Opening hours are from 08:30 to 18:00 all year round.
