The Neolithic Qingdun Site, also known as Qingdun Ruins, is located about 28 kilometers northwest of Hai’an County and is a well-known ancient site in the archaeological community across the country. It is now a cultural heritage site under the protection of Nantong City. Qingdun is a picturesque village surrounded by clear waters, with only a Qingdun Bridge at the northeast corner connecting to the outside traffic. The southern and central parts of the mound are covered with closely packed residential houses, while the north is a flat field where several excavations of the site have been conducted in previous years.
The discovery of the Qingdun Site dates back to August 1973. To benefit the villagers, the Qingdun Brigade constructed a residential area and excavated a 236-meter-long Qingdun New River across the west of the mound, uncovering a large number of ancient artifacts such as pottery, stone, bone tools, and antler and animal bones. Since then, the veil of this ancient and mysterious land has been lifted.
The Handled Perforated Red Pottery Axe: Among the numerous pottery items unearthed at the Qingdun Site, there is a piece known as the ‘National Treasure’ – the handled perforated red pottery axe, which is a replica of a stone axe, consisting of a handle and a perforated axe part. This pottery axe was not a practical tool but provided physical evidence of the method of mounting handles on perforated stone axes at the time. In terms of historical, spiritual, and aesthetic value, it can be considered the treasure of Hai’an County, a symbol of Hai’an spirit, and a testament to Hai’an’s history.
