The China Silk Museum is divided into several exhibition areas, including Silk Kingdom, Silk Weaving and Cocoon, Dyeing and Clothing, and Performance and Sales. The design and layout of the museum adopt authentic representation techniques to restore indoor scenes and reproduce the historical charm of Yongtai Silk Factory and the ‘Silk Capital’, witnessing Wuxi’s pivotal role in the history of China’s silk industry. Wuxi has been known as the hometown of silk since ancient times, with a thriving silk industry since the Ming and Qing dynasties, attracting merchants from all over, and the name ‘Silk Dock’ is well-known to all. At the beginning of the last century, national industry and commerce surged, and silk reeling, textile, and flour became the three pillar industries of Wuxi. With the opportunity of Shanghai’s opening, the Zhou (Shunqing) and Xue (Nanming, Shouxuan) families began, with Yongtai Silk Factory as the leader, and in collaboration with many silk reeling enterprises in Wuxi, after more than thirty years of hard work, they became the ‘Silk Capital’ recognized both domestically and internationally. In the 1930s of the last century, Wuxi’s total number of silk factories, silk production, quality, and export volume were all at the top of the country, standing at the forefront of the era. The museum is open all year round from 09:00 to 20:00, and the specific business status is subject to the opening conditions of the day.
