Niulmu Forest, also known as “Mulmu Mountain”, is located in Xiayang Town, Yongchun County, Quanzhou City. It preserves a well-preserved and characteristic virgin forest group.
Generally, when coming here, most people first arrive in Quanzhou, then take a long-distance bus to Yongchun County, and then charter a car to the scenic spot. After getting off the car, you will find the overwhelming greenery, which is Niulmu Forest.
Niulmu Forest is a summer resort, with clouds and mist lingering all year round. The annual average temperature is between 17 – 18 degrees Celsius. After passing through the ticket checkpoint, walk forward along the path paved with small gravel. On both sides of the path, ancient trees tower into the sky, flowers and plants are lush, and the breath of primitive nature is everywhere. Then, in the green nature, enjoy the fun of climbing the mountain, feel the gentle mountain breeze, and breathe fresh air.
First, you will pass through a large bamboo forest, and then comes the interesting Macaque Garden in Niulmu Forest. The monkeys here are all wild and free-ranging. There are naughty monkeys hopping around in the forest in groups or alone along the road. The monkeys are not afraid of people. However, if you are taking pictures, you need to keep at least 1 meter away from them and do not make eye contact with them to avoid being scratched.
Also, don’t open your bag in front of the monkeys, as they will think there is food in it and may “besiege” and “rob” you. They will really swarm up when they see food.
There is only one path in the forest. You can just climb the mountain, enjoy the virgin forest scenery and watch the monkeys. Of course, like an ordinary forest, it also has small waterfalls, allowing you to get close to the water while climbing. The entire scenic area has relatively little artificial development and the management is not particularly good. There are not many interesting facilities, just a grass skiing area and a short cable car. However, due to the large number of trees and lush vegetation, being surrounded by bamboo and ancient trees, and the fact that it is not very well-known with not too many tourists, it is still a good place for a quiet mountain tour.
Accommodation is available in the scenic area, and the price ranges from 200 – 300 yuan. It is about an hour’s drive from the county seat, so you can also return to the county seat for accommodation as there are more accommodation options there.
Basically, half a day is enough for a mountain tour. If you come from Quanzhou and other places, including the travel time, it will basically take a whole day. If you are already staying in the county seat for tourism, then half a day is sufficient.
