The Cao Xueqin Memorial Hall is located in the Beijing Botanical Garden at the foot of the beautiful Xishan Mountain. The memorial hall is a rectangular courtyard surrounded by low walls. There are a total of 18 rooms in two rows, imitating Qing Dynasty architecture. The exhibition rooms in the front row display the living environment of the Bannermen in the Qing Dynasty, models of Cao Xueqin’s living and creative environment in Xishan, major discoveries about Cao Xueqin’s life experience in the past 200 years and related articles and books.
The six exhibition rooms in the back row are divided into two parts: Cao Xueqin’s life and family background and the influence of ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’. The exhibits on display include an octagonal table that reproduces the folk customs of Cao Xueqin’s era, a chest-on-chest, a pier box, blue and white porcelain, and some folk utensils mentioned in ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’, such as a full set of sacrificial vessels of Manchu Shamanism, silver locks, hand warmers, and horsetail whisks. In addition, the memorial hall also sets aside a special room to exhibit the research results on Cao Xueqin and various editions of ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’.
