The former residence of Meng Yangxuan, a descendant of the 70th generation of Mencius (the head of Meng’s Nanzhi Jinxiu Tang). Built in 1912, it is in European Baroque style. The back building is a Chinese enclosed courtyard. This courtyard has a simple and elegant architectural style and boldly absorbs the strengths of Chinese and Western architectures. It is a typical eclectic building and can be regarded as a witness to the cultural exchanges between China and the West in modern Tianjin.

This century-old old house is a relatively complete Chinese-Western combination building preserved in Tianjin at present. At the age of 29, Meng Yangxuan took over the two-hundred-year foundation of Qianxiangyi across the country and gradually moved the national settlement and reception center into Qianxiangyi’s ‘base camp’ (No. 12, Bo’ai Road). Because Meng Yangxuan enshrined the ancestral temple of the Meng family on the third floor at the back, later generations also call this courtyard Meng’s Ancestral Temple.
