The museum is located next to the Sancha River Estuary in Tianjin. Wei Baoquan, the curator, has a unique skill – making rosewood woodcarving pots. The materials he uses for making pots are mostly precious woods such as rosewood and yellow rosewood. They are made through elaborate carving and multiple polishing processes. Each pot is different. Some are as big as a fist and some as small as a chestnut.

They are exquisitely beautiful and people can’t put them down. When Wei Baoquan was young, he had a special preference for all kinds of wooden products. He was particularly fond of the carved beams and painted pillars of ancient buildings. Due to business reasons, he often had to go to the south. While others were busy negotiating business, Wei Baoquan would take time to go to the countryside to ‘search for treasures’.

When he encountered door panels, window shutters, furniture, etc. that he liked, he would buy them. After being repaired and renovated by his skillful hands, their value doubled. Placed at home, they are full of cultural atmosphere. Later, as his ‘possessions’ accumulated more and more, he simply transformed his own home into a museum. The whole family lives in the museum. Now, for Wei Baoquan to make a pot, from conception, drafting, material selection to the finished product, it requires dozens of procedures and a lot of time.

Playing with rosewood woodcarving pots every day has become an important part of life. Inspiration is accumulated from playing. Today, Wei Baoquan’s rosewood woodcarving pots are not only exhibited in the museum but also often participate in various handicraft exhibitions and have received high praise from all sectors of society.
