The Minhang District Museum covers a total construction area of 4200 square meters, with an exhibition area of 1920 square meters. It houses two permanent exhibition halls: the ‘Maqiao Ancient Culture Exhibition Hall’ and the ‘Chinese Ethnic Musical Instruments Exhibition Hall’.
The Maqiao Ancient Culture Exhibition Hall, spanning 430 square meters, displays over 200 artifacts unearthed from the Maqiao site, representing the Liangzhu, Maqiao cultures, and relics from the Spring and Autumn to the Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties. These artifacts are showcased in an innovative manner, accompanied by three-dimensional models, touch-screen computers, and multimedia elements such as sound, light, and video, vividly recreating the scene of Maqiao ancestors thousands of years ago who used wisdom and diligence to improve their living conditions, and dynamically interpreting the primitive civilization along the ancient coastline of central Shanghai. The Chinese Ethnic Musical Instruments Exhibition Hall, covering 640 square meters, exhibits over 300 pieces of musical instruments from ancient to modern times, categorized into ‘aerophones, chordophones, idiophones, and membranophones’. This fully reflects the classification and development of Chinese ethnic musical instruments. The museum also displays musical instruments donated by many modern music celebrities in China, along with precious historical documents. With modern display methods such as holographic imaging and models of musical instrument sound principles, the hall blends ancient and modern instruments, showcasing the charm of Chinese ethnic musical instruments in a three-dimensional manner.
