Established in 1936, Hsinchu City Zoo launched the ‘Zoo Regeneration Project’ in 2017. The project is guided by three core values: first, animal welfare, creating cage-free exhibits that are suitable for the animals, with each animal’s activity space increased to 1.5 times the previous size; second, preserving historical memory, the park has deliberately retained old trees and historical buildings such as the Elephant Gate, allowing visitors to feel both familiar and pleasantly surprised upon entering; third, promoting life education, making the zoo an excellent venue for experiencing life education is an important mission of Hsinchu Zoo.

On December 28, 2019, the zoo was re-opened, reviving the once gradually forgotten zoo and transforming it into a popular attraction. The current ‘5 major attractions’ include the historical building ‘Elephant Gate’, ‘Hippo Lele’, ‘New Home Experience of Bengal Tigers’, ‘The Big Aviary’, and ‘Forest Canteen’. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday 09:00-17:00; the zoo is closed all day on Mondays; and also closed all day on New Year’s Eve.
