The relatively old street in Toucheng – Heping Street. During the Qing Dynasty, it was once the main economic road on the Lanyang Plain. Now it is the only remaining old street in the Yilan area. Heping Street, which runs from north to south, is a street extended from river transportation. It is connected to important cargo distribution centers such as Wushih Port, Toucheng Port, and Dama Smoke. It was once very prosperous. Unfortunately, good times didn’t last. In 1924, a flood inundated Toucheng Port. Coupled with the subsequent development of highways and railways and the economic shift of the Lanyang Plain, the old Heping Street gradually declined. Now, the North Gate Fude Temple at the northern section of the old Heping Street and the South Gate Fude Temple at the other end were built and worshipped by residents at that time to block the street’s wealth. The long row of bungalows beside it are the ruins of the Thirteen Hongs in the Qing Dynasty. There is also the Lu Residence at No. 139, which combines various architectural styles. And opposite it is the ruins of Toucheng Port, which has become a pond. Nos. 51 to 61, Chen Chunji and Yuanhecheng, are magnificent Taisho-era Japanese buildings. The Sanchun Hall in Qingyuan Palace at the center of the old street preserves the early simple stone carvings. Strolling on the old street, imagining the bustling scenes of the past through the buildings on both sides, and feeling the changes of the street from prosperity to decline is like walking through a vicissitudes of architectural history!
