Tianxiang Scenic Area

Tianxiang is located on the river terrace of the Taroko Liwu River basin, an open terrace landform. The area is home to two rare plants, Taroko euphorbia and Taroko oak. The scenery is beautiful, offering views of meander potholes and other geological landscapes. Surrounded by towering cliffs, the spectacular valley incised terrain, and marble boulders, it is truly awe-inspiring. Originally named Tabido, meaning mountain palm, it was once the location of the Tayal tribe. The name was changed to Tianxiang in memory of Wen Tianxiang when the Central Cross-Island Highway was constructed. Fu Garden and Mei Garden are two small parks before entering Tianxiang, filled with plum trees and various flowers. From the Wen Tianxiang sculpture garden, one can overlook the entire panorama of Tianxiang. Xiangde Temple is located on the high river terrace across the Liwu River, with a towering golden statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva standing on the mountain. The well-maintained flora within the temple is also a highlight. Near Xiangde Temple, the ‘Tianfeng Pagoda’ is a seven-story treasure pagoda. Standing in front of the pagoda, one can enjoy an expansive view, with the beauty of mountains and waters at their feet, making it an excellent spot for sightseeing. The ‘Huoran Pavilion Trail’ is a hiking trail, approximately 2 kilometers away from Tianxiang. It is an easy descent from Huoran Pavilion to Tianxiang, allowing one to appreciate the scenery along the way. The area is open all year round, accessible 24/7. Tianxiang serves as a rest stop on the Taroko and Central Cross-Island Highway, with service stations providing recreational consultation, road condition inquiries, and interpretative services.
