Lao Mei is a typical coastal fishing village in the northern part of Taiwan, located in the Lao Mei area of Shimen District on the North Coast. The scenery is breathtaking, especially during the green stone troughs season which typically occurs in April and May. This unique geological landscape, known as ‘green stone troughs,’ emerges when the winter northeast monsoon nurtures the rock surfaces with splashing waves, fostering a vast growth of green seaweed, creating an astonishing coastal view.

As the summer sun intensifies, the seaweed disappears, making the green stone troughs a fleeting spectacle that attracts professional photographers from all over Taiwan to capture its beauty and for wedding photoshoots. Visitors are advised to check the daily low tide times of the Shimen area on the meteorological bureau’s website to ensure they do not miss the opportunity to photograph the green coastal scenery due to high tides.

The Lao Mei Green Stone Troughs are open all year round and accessible 24/7. It is important to note that the green stone troughs are facing an existential crisis due to tourist trampling. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the view from the beach and refrain from stepping on the green stone troughs. The area above the troughs is particularly slippery and dangerous, and any injuries from slipping would be regrettable.
