The Japanese built the “Eternal Love Bridge” to celebrate the birthdays of Emperor Showa (Emperor Hirohito) and the Empress (Empress Nagako, also known as Kojun Empress). In Japan, the Emperor’s birthday is referred to as “Tenchosei,” and the Empress’s birthday as “Jikuyo-no-sekku.” Hence, the two bridges were named “Tenchosei Bridge” and “Jikuyo-no-sekku Bridge,” collectively called the “Eternal Love Bridge,” as a blessing for the happiness of the imperial couple’s marriage, symbolizing “eternity.”

The bridges are open year-round and accessible 24 hours a day.
