Carp Pond is situated in Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, formed by the confluence of tributaries from the Papaya River and the Hualien River. The lake is expansive, with a depth of 15 meters, and its waters remain clear throughout the year. Originating from the heart of the pond, the waters shape an elliptical surface that is longer from north to south and narrower from east to west, with an area that fluctuates with the seasons.
At the southern end of Carp Pond lies the Chin-Nei Forest Recreation Area and camping site, while the foothills on the west side are home to the Jade Mountain Theological College. Adjacent to the lake is the Eastern Mountain Fish Hatchery. A preferred route is to take a leisurely walk around the lake, where the morning mist creates a serene atmosphere. The surrounding mountains cast their emerald hue into the water, reflecting off the white buildings by the lake. Willow trees line the banks, adorned with quaint pavilions, and a white statue of Guanyin stands atop a hill on a small island in the lake, benevolently watching over the water. You may also opt for cycling. If you ride from the Hualien East Rift Valley to Carp Pond, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery along the way, and then cycle around the 5-kilometer bike path around the pond, savoring the tranquility of the lake area. Every year from June to August, Carp Pond hosts a Firefly Season, with the glimmering lights scattered between the mountains and the lake, attracting a large number of tourists to view the fireflies. Additionally, Sally’s Restaurant at the visitor center north of Carp Pond offers light meals and afternoon tea services, featuring local specialties such as taro, sweet potato crisps, and shrimp cakes, which are well worth a taste. For specific opening hours and business status, please refer to the daily opening conditions.
