The museum showcases more than 500 ancient coins of various types and special uses, including shell coins, spade coins, knife coins, and round coins from the pre-Qin period, copper coins, silver ingots, and paper money from the Qin, Han, and later dynasties. Shell coins were the primitive currency in ancient China, made of sea shells. They emerged in the Shang Dynasty three thousand years ago and are the ancestor of coins. They are processed from natural sea shells. Spade coins are also ancient Chinese currency. Due to their shape resembling a spade, they are also called spade-shaped coins. They emerged in the Spring and Autumn Period and were minted and circulated until the late Warring States Period.
