The Sea Oil Tank Art Center is pleased to announce the presentation of the 2024 creation ‘Shanghai 6’. This is a composition of six spectacular and beautiful roses, marking Ryman’s fresh conception of this quintessential theme.

The sculpture stands tall at eight meters. With its exaggerated scale, artificial appearance, and petals falling on the lawns along the paths, it recreates this symbol of natural beauty and the embodiment of perfect contradictions in an inconceivably romantic manner, revealing the essence that all things are not perfect and eternal.

Ryman intentionally highlights the giant scale and single color of the roses, transforming them into silhouette-like abstract shapes. Not only does this detach the commercial value and labels attached to roses, but it also strips away people’s preconceived notions.

In his past ‘Rose’ series, the artist drew inspiration from the cycles and seasons of nature. Allowing tiny insects like ladybugs, aphids, beetles, or bees to inhabit the clusters, he hoped to ‘allow viewers to appreciate the huge flowers of ‘roses’ from the perspective of realistic and humorous bugs’.

This time, for the Yuz Museum and Panlong World’s anniversary celebration, Ryman specially created ‘Shanghai 6’. Not only did he spray the roses with a vermilion hue that is highly elegant and brilliant to local audiences, but he also placed spiders, which symbolize auspicious meanings and joy in traditional folklore, among the clusters. This conveys the most sincere blessings and beautiful hopes for the future and invites viewers to immerse themselves in exploring the eternal themes of humanity and nature, self and the world. From April 25th to October 27th, we are open.
