Beitai Ancient Town

Beitai is located at the northern end of Tanggu District in Tianjin City, known for its tranquil and serene natural environment, and has been historically referred to as the ‘Land of Marshes’. Since the early Qing Dynasty, it has been a renowned fishing town in the areas of Jinjing and Eastern Hebei. The banks of Beitai River are lined with shell reefs, and the muddy riverbanks are knee-deep, making it ideal for the reproduction of shellfish.

During the spring and autumn seasons, clams, mussels, and snails are easily accessible on the beach. The mud hosts a variety of microorganisms that, when exposed to the scorching sun, create a layer of buttery substance. During high tide, this buttery substance floats on the water surface, serving as excellent bait for fish and shrimp. The fishing season spans from the beginning of spring to the light snow each year.

In spring, a large number of fish schools come to the Bohai Sea to forage, including chub, prawns, and other fish. During the Grain Rain season, some valuable economic fish species return to the Bohai Sea coast to spawn with the warm currents, reaching a peak around the summer solstice. This period is known as the fishing season. The sea produces yellow croaker, sea bass, prawns, crabs, flatfish, and squid.

Not only is the yield high, but the quality is excellent, especially the prawns, which are large, meaty, and delicious. As you sail into the vast ocean and witness the seamless blend of water and sky, and as you see the freshly caught fish and shrimp leaping on the deck, you will feel the ocean’s vastness, generosity, and selflessness. Being amidst the boundless sea allows you to forget the hustle and bustle of the city and the bothersome trivialities.

You can rise early to watch the sunrise over the sea, the changing tides, and the shifting wind directions. You can symbolically participate in activities such as navigation, fishing, and sorting the catch to experience the life of a fisherman. If interested, you can enjoy fishing at sea and cook the freshly caught fish, shrimp, and crabs on board, tasting the local seafood known as the ‘Net-Up Banquet’ (produced by the Bohai Sea, made by fishermen, with staple food), which is all complimentary.

Its taste can rival that of a five-star hotel. The site is open throughout the year, Tuesday to Sunday from 09:30 to 17:30; closed all day on Mondays; and open from 09:30 to 17:30 on New Year’s Day, Spring Festival, Qingming Festival, Labor Day, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and National Day.
