In the early years, this place was situated on Nanmenwai Street and functioned as a cloth market, which serves as the historical backdrop for Clothing Street. Clothing Street, at that time, was merely a few hundred meters in length. The street was lined with various trading companies, which were incredibly popular during the 1980s and 1990s.
At its peak, Clothing Street boasted 102 stores, earning it the nickname ‘hundred stores’. Among these numerous stores were branches of prominent department stores such as the Department Store Building, Zhongyuan Company, and International Shopping Mall.
