Coral Sea

Coral is formed by the colonies or skeletal fossils of coral polyps. Coral polyps are marine, cylindrical, and coelenterate animals. Their food enters through the mouth and the remnants are expelled through the same opening. They feed on tiny marine plankton and, during their growth, absorb calcium and carbon dioxide from seawater. They then secrete limestone, which forms their protective shell.
