Dabei Chan Monastery

Dabei Chan Monastery is located in Hebei District, Tianjin. It is named after enshrining the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion and Mercy. The monastery was built in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. It has a long history and a large scale. The incense in the temple is prosperous. It is a place for local people to worship Buddha. There is not much commercial atmosphere here and there are no various charging items, giving people a more pure and pious atmosphere.


The area of Dabei Chan Monastery is not large. The layout is simple and elegant. There are many historical relics and it is very simple and unsophisticated. There are also memorial halls for Master Xuanzang and Master Hongyi. The main entrance of the temple is located on the south side and is divided into east and west courtyards. There are many buildings such as the Mahavira Hall, the Dabei Hall, the Ksitigarbha Hall, the memorial hall for Master Xuanzang, the memorial hall for Master Hongyi and the lecture hall.


After entering the temple, visit on foot. Generally, it takes about two hours. In the buildings of the east courtyard, the scale of the Mahavira Hall is very spectacular. The hall enshrines hundreds of statues of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas from the Wei, Jin Dynasties to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. They are all very precious. In the center, there is a statue of the Bodhisattva of Thousand Hands and Thousand Eyes.


You can come here to worship piously. There are also many historical relics and Buddha statues in other halls for visiting and worshiping.



Opening hours: Open from 09:00 to 16:00 all year round; closed all day on New Year’s Eve.


Tips: 1. The temple provides three free incense sticks and refuses to bring in incense from outside. So there is no need to bring it by yourself. Especially, don’t believe the words of incense sellers at the gate that it is more expensive inside.
