Earthquake Resistance Monument

The Earthquake Resistance Monument in Tianjin was built on July 28, 1986, on the tenth anniversary of the Tangshan earthquake. It is located at the triangular area where Nanjing Road, Chengdu Avenue and Hebei Road intersect in Heping District, Tianjin City, China. The Tianjin Municipal People’s Government built it to commemorate the 242,000 people who died in the Tangshan earthquake that occurred at 3:42 on July 28, 1976.


The monument body of the Earthquake Resistance Monument in Tianjin is formed by four right-angled triangular granite slabs. It is pyramid-shaped, wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, implying wisdom, strength, and prospects. The four supports represent stability and support from all directions. At the same time, it also implies gratitude for the support from all directions to Tianjin. The total height is 19.


76 meters, symbolizing the occurrence time of the Tangshan earthquake in 1976. The monument looks like the Chinese character ‘人’ (people) from all aspects, and from the air, it is a cross shape. Such a design implies that man can conquer nature and reflects that the power of the people can rebuild their homes and build a new Tianjin. At the top of the monument, there are three figures representing workers, peasants, and soldiers.
