On June 23, 2020, I embarked on a solo gastronomic adventure in Shanghai Xintiandi. My day was dedicated to exploring the culinary delights of the area, and I documented my experience on July 8, 2020, at 22:50.
I had long been intrigued by the 1886 Auto Restaurant, a chain with several locations across Shanghai. The name, I discovered, is a tribute to the year two Germans were granted the patent for the world’s first automobile. In honor of this automotive milestone, a Lamborghini red car is suspended from the ceiling at the entrance of the restaurant, making a bold statement. The vibrant colors, dazzling lights, and opulent decor create an upscale ambiance, ideal for bar enthusiasts and those who appreciate a lively night out.
The 1886 Auto Restaurant (Xintiandi Store) is located at Huangpi South Road, No. 848, in the China Overseas Uni-Mall L152. It’s easily accessible via Subway Lines 9/13, with Madang Road Station’s Exit 5 just a 200-meter walk away.
For my meal, I indulged in a set that included a vegetable salad, grilled chicken wings, and a Western platter featuring butter mashed potatoes, Iberian pork ribs, and confit duck legs. Opting for a non-alcoholic beverage, I enjoyed a glass of orange juice instead of beer. The portion was generous, and I found myself taking the pork ribs home. The Iberian pork ribs, confit duck legs, and grilled chicken wings were all exceptionally flavorful. The pork ribs, in particular, stood out with their high-quality ingredients and a sweet, fragrant sauce. The grilled chicken wings were best enjoyed piping hot, and the vegetable salad provided a refreshing contrast with its well-balanced dressing.
After savoring my meal, I decided to leave before the live performance began, feeling that the high-end night bar scene was better suited for a younger crowd.
This gastronomic journey was a memorable one, and I look forward to more such culinary explorations in the future.
