Artist Chen Shizong has been deeply engaged in Buddhist art creation for decades and is an outstanding representative of contemporary Buddha statue painting. In autumn and winter this year, he holds a solo exhibition ‘The Pure Sound of Dharma’ at the Hong-gah Museum. It presents his oil and watercolor works expressing Buddhist teachings in recent years, attempting to convey Buddhist wisdom to viewers and achieve the integration of artistic creation and spiritual practice, starting a journey of purifying the soul.

Chen Shizong grew up in a traditional Buddhist family since childhood and was deeply influenced by Buddhism and temple culture. In the 1980s, he entered an art school to specialize in painting, laying a solid foundation in Western painting and resolving to integrate his faith and understanding of the Dharma into his creations. Since the 1990s, his works have been known for their delicate brushstrokes and soft colors, gradually forming a unique and iconic artistic style. Chen Shizong often meditates and studies Buddhist scriptures during the creative process. Each of his works is the embodiment of his understanding of the Dharma and through this, he has a spiritual dialogue with viewers, bringing inner enlightenment and stability.

Chen Shizong’s oil paintings often express the profound connotations of Buddhist philosophy. With intense yet light and unrestrained colors, he vividly shows the charm and bearing of Buddha statues, telling the compassion and wisdom of Bodhisattvas. While his watercolor works mostly interpret ecology and nature. By using the blank-leaving technique, he extends boundless aesthetics and clear thinking. This exhibition sincerely invites the audience to feel every moment when the pure sound of Dharma moistens the soul like flowing water. Through continuous exploration and dialogue, find one’s own peace and warm glow in the noisy world.
