As summer vacation commences, parents across the country embark on trips with their children, with many opting to visit Shanghai. The city’s weather is particularly hot during these months. While shopping is a popular activity, the newly opened Shanghai Qianguqing scenic area is a must-visit destination.
I had the pleasure of visiting the scenic area with my mother yesterday. This area is primarily known for its indoor performances, which are a great respite from the outdoor heat. After exhausting outdoor activities, one can retreat indoors to enjoy the shows.
The Shanghai Qianguqing scenic area is conveniently located by the Huangpu River in the World Expo Park, just a short walk from Exit 1 of the World Expo Avenue Station on Metro Line 13. Besides the performances, the area boasts popular spots such as the Time-travel Street, Qianguqing Street, and Light and Shadow Show, ideal for capturing photos and sharing on social media.
For those visiting with friends, the Modern Dress-Up Pavilion offers a unique experience to change into a cheongsam for a photo shoot. The sight of many elegant women in cheongsams creates a vivid impression of 1930s old Shanghai.
Outdoor attractions are particularly appealing to children, who can enjoy the splash pool, children’s playground, and jungle climbing. The magical forest, forest pasture, and love valley provide endless entertainment, making it seem as though children could play all day long. It’s advisable to bring an extra set of clothes for children to change into after the splash pool.
This one-day trip offers a mix of cultural experiences, outdoor fun, and photographic opportunities, making it a perfect weekend getaway for families. The must-see large-scale song and dance performance, ‘Shanghai Qianguqing,’ offers a lifetime experience. Before entering the park, make your reservation for the showtime and seat, and then enjoy other activities. When the time comes, take your seat according to the seat number. This performance narrates the past and present of Shanghai through song and dance, featuring a strong storyline and superb stage design. The entire audience area is part of the stage, with performers occasionally appearing from the audience, creating surprises at every turn. Sometimes, performers are right beside you, providing an excellent immersive experience.
For families, the show ‘WA! Dinosaur’ is a hit among dinosaur enthusiasts, especially children. It is filled with their cheers and laughter. Instead of rigid scientific explanations, the show uses entertaining performances to teach children about dinosaurs, with plenty of interactive segments. Before the show begins, staff members interact with children in the audience using dinosaur toys.
The 5D live experience drama, ‘The Great Earthquake,’ is also unforgettable, with a touching story. Arriving early allows you to choose seats in the front row that provide an earthquake experience, where you can feel the vibrations during the performance. The audience can also participate in this drama, with the director inviting audience members to the stage to play roles such as firefighters, nurses, or the public. After a brief explanation of the plot, participants can officially join the performance, with many volunteers fully immersed in their roles. In addition to these three recommended performances, the scenic area also offers many outdoor programs, such as ‘Steampunk Giant Puppet’, ‘Punk Planet 2060’, ‘Suit Monster’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, and ‘Republic of China Flash Mob’, with performers happy to take photos and interact with you.
The dining options within the scenic area are also quite diverse, with the Qianguqing Restaurant on the first floor, a barbecue square on the second floor, and even Tim’s coffee. You can also bring your own cup, as there are water dispensers and rest areas available.
In summer, you can spend a whole day at the Shanghai Qianguqing scenic area. Address: No. 1750, World Expo Avenue, Pudong New Area, Shanghai. Directions: Exit 1 of World Expo Avenue Station on Metro Line 13, a 2-3 minute walk.
