The ancient Guanyin Temple was built in about the fifth year of Jiaqing (1800). According to the inscriptions in the temple, the temple was built by boat owners who raised funds. Guanyin belief is very common in Macau. According to legend, Guanyin has a compassionate heart and protects fishermen from returning to sea safely. Guanyin Ancient Temple has a long history. It has silently guarded the urban area of Coloane for more than 200 years and witnessed the development and changes in the community. Together with Tin Hau Ancient Temple, Tam Kung Temple and Sam Shing Kung Temple, it is collectively known as the Four Temples, and the public also forms The Four Temples Charity Association manages temple-related affairs.
