Huang Binhong Memorial Hall, located in the former residence of the famous painter Huang Binhong, is a significant cultural heritage site. He relocated here in the autumn of 1948 and dedicated his later years to creating numerous landscape paintings of West Lake, affectionately referring to himself as ‘willing to be an old painter of West Lake’. Following his death in March 1955, his family generously donated all of his previous works and collections, which numbered over ten thousand pieces, to the state. In recognition of his contributions, his former residence was transformed into the National Huang Binhong Memorial Room in September 1959.
The memorial room is situated within a private courtyard that boasts a square-shaped yard. At its heart stands a full-body white marble statue of Huang Binhong, encircled by pine, bamboo, and plum trees, creating a serene and inspiring atmosphere. The exhibition hall is housed within a two-story building. On the ground floor, visitors can find the artist’s painting studio, which contains his redwood painting table, stationery, wooden sofa, and other personal items that offer a glimpse into his creative process. The upstairs exhibition room, spanning 165 square meters, displays twelve of the artist’s representative landscape and flower-and-bird paintings, providing a comprehensive view of his artistic achievements.
Additionally, the relic exhibition room is dedicated to showcasing the artist’s chronology, publications, manuscripts, and other artifacts that provide a deeper understanding of his life and work. The memorial hall operates all year round, with visiting hours from 09:00 to 16:30, allowing art enthusiasts and the general public to pay their respects and appreciate the legacy of Huang Binhong.
