Jianfu Guanyin Temple is located at the intersection of Jintang Highway and Da Zhi Gu Middle Road in Hedong District, Tianjin, covering an area of 8,400 square meters. Da Zhi Gu, known as the cradle of Tianjin, historically housed over 30 temples and monasteries, earning the saying ‘There was Da Zhi Gu before there was Tianjin Guard.’ Jianfu Guanyin Temple was constructed on the site of the Medicine King Temple in Da Zhi Gu and represents the relocation and reconstruction of the Buddhist Jianfu Hermitage. The original Jianfu Hermitage, built during the Republic of China era and located in Xiaosunzhuang, is a cultural heritage site in Hedong District, currently home to 20 resident nuns.
The central axis of Jianfu Guanyin Temple comprises a Song Dynasty archway, the Mountain Gate Hall, the Tian Guan Maitreya Hall, and the Yuan Tong Bao Hall. Flanking these are the Halls of the Three Saints of the East, the Halls of the Three Saints of the West, the Protector Hall, the Ksitigarbha Hall, the Medicine King Hall, the Tree King Bodhisattva Hall, the Scripture Repository, the Five Views Hall, the Buddha Recitation Hall (capable of accommodating 300 people), the Lecture Hall (also known as the Audio-Visual Hall, capable of accommodating 400 people), the Buddhist Guesthouse (also known as the Upper Guest Hall), a computer room, monks’ quarters, storage rooms, and a large conference room. In the basement of the Yuan Tong Bao Hall, a unique ‘Repayment Hall’ will be built in China, housing the Three Worlds Tathagata and Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, and capable of accommodating 10,000 memorial tablets for the deceased. On the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, the temple’s monks perform meritorious services for the deceased, praying for their liberation from suffering and rebirth in the Pure Land. The temple’s bell and drum towers will be open to the public, housing a 5-ton bronze bell (one of the temple’s three treasures) and a two-meter diameter Thunder Drum. Above the bell and drum towers, four pavilions in the style of the Song Dynasty have been constructed, providing an excellent spot for meditation and Zen practice. The construction of Jianfu Guanyin Temple is characterized by its simplicity, elegance, uniqueness, cohesion, grandeur, and aesthetic appeal, reflecting both historical features and modern style, complementing the nearby Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties’ Tian Fei Palace. It is poised to become a distinctive Buddhist activity venue, a significant Bhikkhuni forest in the north, and a tourist attraction. The temple’s opening hours and business status are subject to daily conditions.Jianfu Guanyin Temple
