In May, I planned a trip to Gannan with friends. Before setting off in June, we decided to have a gathering to discuss our travel preparations. We discovered a tea room near one of our friend’s houses, where we intended to enjoy afternoon tea and chat. To our delight, the place offered more than just tea – it also served set meals for lunch and dinner. The establishment, Jiayi Pavilion, is located at 1245-1247 West Yan’an Road.

Getting there is straightforward. There are two transportation options: either take Metro Line 4 and exit at West Yan’an Road Station (Exit 2), then walk 1200 meters to reach the destination, or take Bus No. 96 and get off at Dingxi Road, Wuyi Road Station, followed by a 490-meter walk. The business hours of Jiayi Pavilion are from 11:00 to 22:00, and the per capita consumption is around 150 yuan.

The environment is serene and artistic. Jiayi Pavilion is situated ‘face to face’ with the popular #Columbia Circle# in Shanghai, separated by the elevated Yan’an Road. Entering the quiet space of Jiayi Pavilion from the bustling West Yan’an Road, one’s restlessness dissipates, and a sense of Zen naturally arises from the elegant tea ware, creating a unique beautiful artistic conception. The pavilion boasts a total of 12 private rooms, including 2 Japanese tatami rooms, 2 Western-style rooms, 4 Chinese-style rooms, and 2 VIP suites.Japanese Tatami Private Room:
The Japanese private room is named after Li Shangyin’s poem, “I am pleased with my snail shell.” The room features tatami mats, low tables, and stools or soft cushions made from logs, creating an atmosphere of unrestrained freedom. Sitting cross-legged, one can indulge in the most luxurious laziness. The pendant lamp’s light casts a freehand brushwork glow, enhancing the comfort of the space from within.

Chinese-Style Private Room for 15 People:
This Chinese-style private room, equipped with a projector, can accommodate approximately 15 people. The design, colors, and materials evoke ancient Chinese charm, with furniture and tables and chairs in the styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Murals in the room are predominantly elegant ink wash paintings, and the flower arrangements on the table harmonize with the environment. The space integrates Zen tranquility, expressing an artistic conception of indifference to fame and fortune, with a sense of ‘silence is louder than sound at this moment’ and ‘everything is left unsaid.’ It embodies the grandeur of ‘the greatest simplicity’ and ‘great beauty without words.’

Chinese-Style Private Room for 4-5 People:
Designed similarly to the larger Chinese-style private room, this space is ideal for smaller groups of 4-5 people. It maintains the same ancient charm and elegant ink wash paintings, with the same harmonious flower arrangements and Zen tranquility.

Western-Style Private Room:
The Western-style private room boasts retro and comfortable European sofas, blending modern lifestyle elements into the design. It is both modern and grand, offering comfort and romance. Small details throughout the room integrate the essence of Shanghai-style culture, making it a unique space for gatherings.VIP private room: Equipped with a poker dealing machine, allowing for leisure and entertainment while drinking tea. [Service] In case of a tea art performance, one can learn about tea ceremony.
Each private room is equipped with a bell on the table, enabling guests to summon waiters without leaving the room. Fresh fruits and ice cream are also available. The #Zao Ni Tang Yuan#, a daily limited dish, is highly favored. It is soft and sticky-free with delicate date paste that is not overly sweet, leaving a rich aftertaste of pork lard. Those who wish to enjoy this delicacy are advised to inform the restaurant a day in advance. The #Mapo Tofu Meal# is served with half of the green garlic submerged in the sauce, offering a spicy, aromatic, and tender taste. The Mapo Tofu has a slight sweetness that pairs perfectly with white rice. The #Long Chao Shou and Chili Sauce Noodle Meal# features a spicy Long Chao Shou, recommended for those who enjoy spicy food. The chili sauce noodles are average.
