The Twin Pagodas of Zhuozhou, also known as the Liao Dynasty Twin Pagodas, are the iconic structures of the ancient city of Zhuozhou. They are located in the northeastern corner of the old city of Zhuozhou (now under the jurisdiction of Shuangta Office, Tianqiao Street). Both pagodas are stupas, facing each other from the south and north, with the southern one called ‘Zhidu Temple Pagoda’ and the northern one called ‘Yunju Temple Pagoda’. Each pagoda is named after its respective temple, although the temples themselves were destroyed at an unknown time, leaving only the pagodas standing, collectively referred to as the ‘Zhuozhou Twin Pagodas’.
Both pagodas are octagonal brick structures imitating wooden pavilion-style stupas. The southern pagoda has five levels and stands at a height of 44 meters, originally constructed in the 11th year of the Taiping era of the Liao Dynasty (1031 AD). The northern pagoda has six levels and reaches a height of 56 meters, originally constructed in the 8th year of the Da’an era of the Liao Dynasty (1092 AD). The Twin Pagodas are distinctive for their Liao Dynasty architectural style and have had a significant influence within China. They are among the few remaining pavilion-style brick pagodas from the Liao period in China, meticulously crafted to imitate wooden structures, with a hollow interior structure featuring an octagonal corridor on each level. The pagodas are open all year round for visitors to explore.Liao Dynasty Twin Pagodas
