Li Mu Tai Scenic Area is renowned for its picturesque landscape, fresh water streams, and lush greenery, making it an ideal weekend getaway for residents of Beijing and Tianjin. Visitors can enjoy hiking, appreciate the fresh natural environment, and admire the handsome landforms and Great Wall relics. Every spring, the scenic area is adorned with a vast expanse of pear blossoms, making it an excellent spot for photography.
Covering a large area, the scenic area extends approximately 7-8 kilometers deep. Numerous attractions are located along both sides of the main road, with visitors encouraged to walk along this path to the peak at the heart of the area and then return the same way, a journey that takes about 5-6 hours. For those with less stamina, there is the option to return halfway. Additionally, the area offers shuttle services that can save about an hour of hiking, recommended for conserving energy on the ascent and walking down. The hiking routes in Li Mu Tai can be divided into three sections. The first part is from the scenic area entrance to the Ascension Crack and Five Finger Mountain, covering a short distance of about 1-2 kilometers. The main attraction here is the Ascension Crack, a geological wonder akin to the ‘Slit in the Sky’, with towering and steep cliffs on either side. Visitors can climb the stone steps between the cracks to the summit, which takes about half an hour. From the top, there is a broad view, and the remains of the ancient Great Wall from the Northern Qi period can be observed. The second section of the mountain trail leads from the Ascension Crack to Li Mu Tai Villa, covering about 3 kilometers. This path is rich in scenery, featuring attractions such as Taiping Pond, Tortoise Looking at the Sea, Huang La Waterfall, Leopard Pond, Camel Peak, Butterfly Spring, and Monkeys Looking at the Sun. The route boasts a variety of rock formations and cliffs, as well as fresh streams, ponds, and waterfalls, offering a naturally beautiful landscape. The pear blossom-dense area at Li Hua Tai is a must-visit for photography between April and May. Additionally, Li Mu Tai Villa features a Rhododendron Slope, offering beautiful blooms in spring. The final section of the mountain trail starts from Li Mu Tai Villa and continues to the summit of Li Mu Tai, which is over 900 meters above sea level. This longer trail requires about 3-4 hours for a round trip and has fewer attractions, including the Longevity Stone and wild kiwi fruit forest. Many visitors choose to skip this section and return after reaching Li Mu Tai Villa. However, for those who enjoy hiking or trekking, this section offers a broader view from the summit and the exhilaration of reaching the peak.
