The Nie Shichen Martyrdom Memorial is located at the intersection of Zijinshan Road and Jinyan Avenue in the Nankai District. The monument features a granite base with a central stele, standing at a height of 2.4 meters.
On July 9, 1900, Nie Shichen led his troops in a valiant resistance against the Eight-Nation Alliance. Despite being outnumbered, he was encircled by Japanese forces and continued to fight for two hours before being fatally wounded. His heroic sacrifice for his country was commemorated by the Qing government in 1905, who posthumously honored him with the title ‘Loyal and Upright’. The front of the stele is inscribed with ‘The Martyrdom Site of the Loyal and Upright Lord Nie’, while the two supporting pillars bear the inscriptions ‘Courageous and Indomitable, Recalling the Days of War Horses and the Firm Heart Enduring as the Angry Waves Over the Sea; Sincerity Remains in the Verdant Blood, Observing Today’s Trials and Tribulations, the Tragic Laments of the Three Armies’, with the horizontal inscribed phrase ‘Vibrant Spirit’. In 1984, when the monument was re-erected, only the phrase ‘The Martyrdom Site of the Loyal and Upright Lord Nie’ was retained on the stele.Nie Shichen Martyrdom Memorial
