The Nationalities Culture Palace is located on the west side of Chang’an Street in Beijing. It is a museum-like exhibition hall with ethnic characteristics and is one of the top ten buildings in Beijing during the 1950s. The palace covers an area of 32,000 square meters, with a 13-story main building and east and west wing buildings that embrace the sides, with a central exhibition hall extending to the north. The building is white, with a towering tower and eaves crowned with peacock blue glazed tiles, making the overall shape magnificent and grand.

However, the building itself is a major attraction, as it has been recorded in the British-published ‘History of World Architecture’ as the ‘First Palace’ of New China; it has also been selected as one of the fine works of 20th-century Chinese architectural art. The culture palace houses nearly 20 departments involving cultural affairs, business, and functional management, including a museum, the Chinese National Library, the National Academy of Painting, the Chinese National Yearbook Society, exhibition halls, the Nationalities Culture Palace Theater, and a hotel. It collects many precious ethnic artifacts and books, and regularly holds thematic cultural exhibitions. Visitors can learn about the culture, diet, and clothing of various ethnic groups through these exhibitions.

Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 16:30 all year round; closed all day on Mondays; and open from 09:00 to 16:30 during the Spring Festival.
