Latest News about Shanghai Metro

Starting April 15, 2024, Shanghai Metro has expanded its POS machine service to all subway station service centers across the city. This means that both domestic and international cardholders can now purchase subway tickets using POS machines at any Shanghai Metro station. The POS machines will accept a variety of card types, including Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, and Discover.

In addition to expanding POS machine service, Shanghai Metro has also launched a new feature on its “Metro大都会” app to make it easier for foreign visitors to use the subway. Foreign visitors can now register for the app using their passports, Hong Kong and Macao travel permits, or Taiwan resident permits. Once registered, they can bind a payment method to their account and use the app to scan QR codes at the turnstiles to pay for their rides. This eliminates the need for foreign visitors to purchase tickets in advance or exchange currency.
