Yunzhao Temple, formerly known as Xianglong Nunnery, was built by Master Daozong during the Taihe period of the Tang Dynasty. In history, the temple enshrined the Thousand-leaf Treasure Lotus Buddha hidden by the emperor. In the thirtieth year of Wanli, it was bestowed with the name ‘Yunzhao Temple’. As the temple is located at the topmost peak, shrouded by clouds and fog. Looking up from below, it’s hard to tell whether it is the temple among the clouds or the clouds surrounding the temple, hence it got its name Yunzhao Temple.
Yunzhao Temple is majestically located at the top of Panshan Mountain and has long enjoyed a high reputation. It can be regarded as the crown among all the temples in Panshan Mountain and is known as the ‘Buddhist palace in the clouds’. When clouds rise at the mountain peak, the golden and resplendent temple is hidden in the glow. When the clouds disperse, the craggy mountain shines with color. Climbing up to this temple gives one a feeling of ‘looking up, the pagoda is close to the sky; looking down, the world below is in turmoil’. Emperor Qianlong called this place ‘exceptional’. The specific business hours and operating status are subject to the opening situation on that day.Panshan Scenic Area – Yunzhao Temple
