Sanpan Evening Rain

Sanpan Evening Rain is a unique landscape of Panshan Mountain, listed as one of the ‘Top Ten Sights of Tianjin’. This title was inscribed by Mao Changwu, a former consultant to the Tianjin Municipal Government, and is derived from ‘Pan Mountain Evening Rain’, one of the ‘Eight Sights of Jizhou’ in ancient times. The term ‘Sanpan’ refers to the ‘Three Pan Victories’ of Panshan Mountain, while ‘evening rain’ refers to the evening clouds.

Every spring in March, when peach, apricot, and pear blossoms cover Panshan Mountain, the east wind crosses the ridge, and the ground is covered with ‘snow’ that turns clear in the sunlight. As the spring breeze passes, petals fall with the wind, resembling a rain of flowers. In midsummer, after the rain clears in the early evening, the clouds and mist float over the mountain, creating a scene that is neither clear nor rainy, thus called ‘Sanpan Evening Rain’.

Additionally, the unique landscape of Panshan is influenced by its terrain and climate: the beautiful scenery of Panshan varies with altitude differences and seasonal changes, forming a natural spectacle of ‘snowflakes in the upper pan, misty rain in the middle pan, and sunset glow in the lower pan’. There is a poem that says: ‘The peak’s beauty sprays pearls, causing willow branches to stretch. The pool reflects the three pans, and the intoxicating scenery is hard to leave.

‘ The site is open all year round, with full-day access.
