The Wanghailou Church, formerly known as Shengmu Shengde Church, is located on the north side at the western end of Shizilin Street, Hebei District, Tianjin City, diagonally opposite to the Shizilin Bridge. It is named after its former site, Wanghailou. This church was completed at the end of 1859 and has a European Gothic architectural style. The Wanghailou Catholic Church has a rectangular plane.
The church body faces south and is 10 meters high. It is a stone-based brick-wood structure building with blue brick walls facing southwest. There are three flat-topped towers on the front of the building in a mountain shape. The middle tower is 12 meters high and has a penholder structure. Most of the buildings except the middle tower are two stories high. There are also eight beast heads embedded on the top of the towers on both sides, which are specially used for drainage when it rains. Rainwater can gush out from the mouths of the beast heads. Inside the church, there are two rows of columns in parallel. There are no compartments or mezzanines. Buttresses are set on both sides of the entrance. There are three aisles inside. The middle aisle is slightly higher and the side aisles are second. It belongs to the basilica type. On the east and west sides of the main hall of the middle tower, there are eight columns each, supporting the arched ceiling. At the northern end is the main altar of the Virgin Mary. On the left and right are Jesus and the nurturing statue. In addition, pictures of Jesus’ suffering are hung on the walls around the church. The top and walls of the entire building are painted. The doors, windows and the top of the hall are pointed arches. The window coupons inside the church are pointed arched. The window surface is composed of geometric patterns of colorful glass with stories of Jesus’ crucifixion embedded on it. The interior ground is paved with black and white porcelain tiles. The church also has a flat-topped tower. Later, small corner towers were set up at the four corners of the chapel. There is a chanting building behind the church.
