All four gentlemen once went to Japan to pursue knowledge. Their painting styles are unique. Some seek innovation and change, while others are good at adhering to family traditions. They are the second-generation Shanghai school painters who are representative after early Shanghai school masters such as Ren Xiong, Ren Xun, Ren Yu, Ren Yi, Xiong Songquan, Xiong Yizhi, Zhao Zhiqian, and Wu Changshuo.
