Impressionism and Jazz Impressionism music are renowned for their blurred boundaries and imaginative sound effects. Jazz, as the musical language of the 20th century, is characterized by improvisation, freedom, and bold harmonic innovation. Can it be considered a form of modern impressionism? Although originating from different musical traditions, both share similar expressive pursuits: conveying fleeting emotions and atmospheres, and pursuing colorful harmonies and rhythms.

The outstanding representative of French Impressionist music, Ravel, was deeply inspired by jazz. His exquisite musical tapestry subtly reflects the influence of jazz. In early 20th-century Paris, jazz, as an emerging art form, quickly captivated the cultural capital and inspired many composers. The era Ravel lived in was the period when jazz began to flourish.

In 1928, Ravel traveled from Europe to the United States, holding piano recitals in 25 cities by train. There are stories that he encouraged American composers to write music in their own styles with confidence, rather than imitating European predecessors. When George Gershwin met Ravel, he wished to learn from him. Ravel, however, said: “Why be a second-rate Ravel when you can be a first-rate Gershwin?” Ravel’s love for jazz is particularly evident in his ‘Concerto for the Left Hand’ and ‘Boléro’, where the rhythmic jumps and complex harmonies represent his bold exploration and integration of jazz musical language.

This concert aims to answer a question: Is jazz a musical expression that continues the spirit of impressionism? Shanghai and Paris, as melting pots of Eastern and Western cultures, each carry different histories and memories.Early 20th-century Paris, the epicenter of global art and intellectual discourse, was the birthplace of jazz music. This vibrant city, pulsating with modern rhythms, saw the piano and saxophone weave together to craft melodies that were both fresh and nostalgic, reigniting our appreciation for Ravel’s compositions.

This concert serves as a tribute to Ravel’s music and delves into the harmonious blend of jazz and classical music. The refined interplay between piano and saxophone represents a timeless encounter between Ravel and jazz. Two musicians will offer a jazz-infused reinterpretation of Ravel’s iconic pieces.

Audience members will be treated to adaptations of works such as ‘Valse Noble et Sentimentale’, ‘Pavane’, and ‘La Vallée des Cloches’, complemented by original compositions. These pieces will trace a conversation between modernity and tradition, highlighting the captivating allure of the fusion of classical and jazz music.

The concert is scheduled to begin at 20:00 on Friday, October 11th, with an approximate duration of 90 minutes, subject to the live event’s flow.
