Chenghuang Temple, with its existing architecture dating back to the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty, is renowned for its exquisite brick, stone, and wood carvings, often hailed as the best in Jiangnan, collectively known as the ‘Three Wonders’.
The ancient theater within the temple, not only boasts a grand and rare architectural style but also serves as an important venue for the performance of early Yue Opera artists. Renowned performers such as Yuan Xuefen, Fu Quanxiang, Fan Ruijuan, Wang Wenjuan, and Shi Yinhua have all graced the stage of Chenghuang Temple. It holds a glorious chapter in the history of Yue Opera and is thus referred to by historians as the ‘Cradle of Yue Opera Art’. Adjacent to the west is Huian Temple, which forms a unity with Chenghuang Temple. The eminent monk, Wudao Master, serves as the abbot. The temple’s corners are majestic, and its statues are solemn and dignified. Chenghuang Temple is a mystical site and a blessed land for humanity. It offers a place for self-cultivation and understanding of ancient Yue culture, a journey to the roots of Yue Opera, the study of the three carving arts, and a chance to converse with the divine for the fulfillment of wishes.
