The dockyard site memorial hall was established to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the establishment of Dagu Dockyard. In 1880, Li Hongzhang, the Beiyang minister and governor-general of Zhili, prepared to establish the Beiyang Navy in Dagu and had 25 ships of various types. To enable the increasingly large ships of the Beiyang Navy to be repaired nearby, Li Hongzhang petitioned Emperor Guangxu for approval and built a dock around the Haitian Temple in Dagu, named ‘Beiyang Navy’s Dagu Dockyard’, also known as the Haitian Temple Dockyard.
It is the third modern shipbuilding yard in China after Fujian Mawei Shipyard Administration and Shanghai Jiangnan Dockyard. It is also an early shipyard and an important munitions base in northern China. The museum includes two parts: the site of the Haitian Temple and the modern Chinese ship repair and construction equipment and dockyard site. The former systematically presents the place where the Qing imperial family offered sacrifices to the sea. The latter centrally displays large-scale equipment, tools, weapons and other cultural relics from the initial stage of dock construction. Through these cultural relics, the development history of Dagu Dockyard is reproduced. The museum has a large sand table of China’s plank-based mud dock and a model of China’s first submarine. It shows the outstanding creativity of China’s northern industrial workers and the wisdom of modern Chinese shipbuilding. The specific opening hours and business status are subject to the opening situation on the day.Site of Beiyang Navy’s Dagu Dockyard
