Xiaohe Zhi Street Historical District is located at the confluence of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Xiaohe River, and Yuhangtang River. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, it has been a hub for the distribution of goods by both water and land, and by the Qing Dynasty, it had evolved into an independent commercial street. Today, the district still preserves historical relics such as workshops, shops, and river docks.
On both sides of the street, small buildings are nestled against the water, with whitewashed walls and black tiles, showcasing the distinctive features of a modern Jiangnan water town. More than half of the original residents remain in the area, effectively continuing the traditional customs and lifestyle of canal-side dwellings.
Strolling here, one hears not the noise of traffic but the laughter of neighbors, and instead of seeing a forest of high-rise buildings, one sees peaceful and elegant ancient residences. A walk around the area is very pleasant. The district is open all year round, with full-day access.
