Yanyuan Garden was built in the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. Jiang Yuanshu, who was then the observer of Taiwan and Penghu in Fujian Province and also in charge of education, encountered danger while crossing the sea. After returning to Changshu, he took the meaning of ‘swallows returning’ and named it Yanyuan Garden. Yanyuan Garden is one of the many classical gardens in Changshu and is divided into three areas.
Entering the gate is the first area. The use of the vertical and horizontal corridors and the rocks and stones behind them makes the garden scenery faintly secluded, giving people a sense of unfathomable depth. To the east is a lotus pond and the ‘Seventy-two Stone Monkeys’ rockery. The rocks are jagged and there is a different world. To the east of the rockery, there are brick stairs of different heights and tall bamboos forming a ‘poetic realm’. Entering the poetry appreciation pavilion from here to the north, and then entering the stone boat by the water, named ‘Returning Boat on the Horizon’. From the east-west horizontal corridor to ‘Wuzhi Hall’ is the second area. Wuzhi Hall was the place where the former garden owner entertained relatives and friends. In front of the hall is a rockery named ‘Yangu’. Behind Wuzhi Hall is the third area, which is where the garden owner lives. It is also separated from Wuzhi Hall by rockery. There are Wuzhi Hall, Poetry Appreciation Pavilion, Sanchanjuan Room, Returning Boat on the Horizon, Tongchu Xian Guan, Poetic Realm, Yangu, Yinsheng Rock, Guoyun Bridge, Lvzhuan Corridor, Zhuqiu, Dongrong Old House, Zhuli Xingchu, Mengqing Lianhua Nunnery, Yixi Pavilion, and Ten Towers in the garden. These are the sixteen scenic spots of Yanyuan Garden. Among these scenic spots, the ‘Yangu’ rockery is especially outstanding. Yangu was made by Ge Yuliang, a famous rockery builder at that time. It is steep, dangerous, clear and strange. It rivals Huaxiu Mountain Villa in Suzhou, Xiaopangu in Yangzhou, and Shuihui Garden in Rugao, and is appreciated by horticulturists.
