Xianghe County, located between Beijing and Tianjin, is a region rich in rivers, water, and wetlands. During economic development, the county has adhered to the principle of balancing economic, social, and ecological benefits. In the adjustment of agricultural structure, the county has leveraged its abundant water resources to vigorously promote lotus planting, aiming to build a backyard garden for Beijing and Tianjin.

This year, the county has successfully implemented the ‘Hundred Thousand Ten Thousand Project’—hundreds of acres of rare lotuses in the ‘First City’, thousands of acres of lotus landscape belt along the Chaobai River, and tens of thousands of acres of lotus and forest wetland landscape in Liusong Town. Currently, the Chaobai River Xiushui Street Bridge Ecological Park has cultivated nearly 1000 acres of lotus, and Liusong Town has reached a planting area of tens of thousands of acres for lotus, with more than 30,000 landscape trees such as weeping willows, American red maples, date garden bamboo, and red osier dogwood planted, making the lotus-based ecological economy of Xianghe County take initial shape.

The main goal of the county is to use the ecological environment to drive the development of the county’s economy and enrich the people. They have cleverly utilized the county’s vast untapped water resources and wetlands to achieve large-scale lotus planting, improving the agricultural planting structure in the lotus planting areas and promoting income growth for farmers. According to calculations from the lotus planting in Qinggongtai Village, Liusong Town, the original income per mu for villagers planting field crops was only a little over 1000 yuan, but now the income per mu for planting lotus is about 3000 yuan, more than double the original income from field crops.

Qinggongtai Village has also established a ‘Lotus Industry Cooperative’, adopting the ‘company + association + farmers’ model to enable planting households to group together to explore the market, provide organic fertilizer, seeds, management, and sales channels uniformly to the planting households, and directly send lotus roots to Beijing, Tianjin, the North China region, and the three northeastern provinces, achieving industrialized production and operation.

The construction of the ecological environment has also driven the development of the tourism industry. The county has focused on the theme of ‘lotus appreciation and picking experience, ecological wetland protection, and leisure landscape culture’. By dredging and expanding the river channels, improving the soil, and planting tens of thousands of high-quality tree species, and selecting more than ten varieties of lotus with over 600,000 buds, a ecological wetland park integrating a lake circuit, water-friendly platforms, and a lotus culture corridor has been created, providing residents with a place for leisure and entertainment. The park is open all year round from 08:30 to 17:30.
