288 Lane Wu Yuan Road is an ordinary alley, and No. 3 in the alley is a modern detached garden residence. The renowned cartoonist Zhang Leping lived here for over fifty years and created numerous art pieces, including the revival works of ‘San Mao’ such as ‘San Mao Learns from Lei Feng’ and ‘San Mao Loves Science’. From the entrance of 288 Lane Wu Yuan Road, an entire wall of ‘San Mao Mural’ catches the eye, presenting the classic ‘San Mao’ image in a four-panel comic style.
A black fence leads one deeper into the alley, and beside the dark wooden gate, a wooden sign with the words ‘Zhang Leping’s Former Residence’ stands out with its simplicity and color. A beloved wisteria vine climbs from the garden on the first floor to the balcony on the second floor. A life-sized sculpture of San Mao in new clothes stands in a corner of the garden. Originally, the building housed two families, with Mr. Zhang Leping’s residence on the second floor, now presented as the living space, while the first floor naturally serves as a literature exhibition. The exhibition area on the first floor is just over a hundred square meters, yet within this space, four exhibition halls are arranged: ‘A Century of Leping’, ‘Master Cartoons’, ‘Artistic Highlights’, and ‘Friends’ Portraits’, offering a wealth of documents and artifacts to review the significant milestones of the master’s life. On the second floor, visitors can enter the living spaces, including Mr. Zhang Leping’s study, bedroom, and his children’s bedrooms. Opening hours are Tuesday, Thursday to Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:30 PM; closed all day on Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday.Zhang Leping’s Former Residence
