Wen Zhengming (1470-1559), a native of Changzhou, Jiangsu (today known as Suzhou). He was a painter who learned from Shen Zhou and traced back to the Yuan Dynasty, as one of the Four Masters of the Ming Dynasty. This painting was created in the year of Jiajing Wushen (1548), taking Su Shi’s ‘Post-Red Cliff Fu’ as the text, depicting Su Shi and two friends carrying wine and fish to revisit the Red Cliff. The entire painting is colored with light cyan and green, close to the literati cyan and green tradition of Zhao Mengfu from the Yuan Dynasty; however, the structure and stacking of the mountains and rocks, as well as the brushwork of the tree branches and leaves, are characteristic of Wen Zhengming’s style. Wen Jia wrote a postscript at the end of the scroll, stating that there was an original work by Zhao Boju in the collection of a Wuzhou scholar, and those in power wanted to take it to offer to the son of the powerful minister Yan Song. Zhengming advised his friend not to begrudge it and to avoid disaster, so he imitated this scroll to comfort him. Open from October 1st to January 5th, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening status.
