Silica Gel, currently one of the most popular independent rock bands in South Korea, is absurd to confine within any framework. Composed of Kim Han-chu, Kim Chun-soo, Kim Geon-jae, and Choi Xi-xi, the band has garnered numerous accolades. These include the Korean Music Awards’ ‘Rookie of the Year’ in 2017, ‘Best Modern Rock Song’ in 2022 and 2023, ‘Best Modern Rock Album’, ‘Best Modern Rock Song’, and ‘Musician of the Year’ in 2024, as well as the ‘Best Music Style’ at the Melon Music Awards in 2023. This demonstrates their astonishing growth.
Formed in 2013 and debuting in 2015 with the EP ‘Pure Sun’, Silica Gel is more than just a band; it is a diverse ensemble that combines music, visuals, and creativity. In 2016, they released their first self-titled album ‘Silica Gel’. After going through military service, member changes, and the pandemic, they finally released their second album ‘POWER ANDRE 99’ in 2023, with ‘Machine Boy’ as the theme. This album perfectly integrates various music styles like a kaleidoscope, along with album cover design and music videos that showcase their attention to detail. This reaffirms their status as one of the leading voices in South Korea.
Apart from their immense popularity in South Korea, Silica Gel has recently expanded overseas. They have performed at Spain’s Primavera Sound, Hong Kong’s clockenflap, and Thailand’s Maho Rasop. Following their debut appearance at the Fireball Festival last year, Silica Gel will finally hold their first solo concert in Taiwan this October.Silica Gel’s existence is akin to clay, full of fluidity and plasticity, embodying beautiful and pleasing chaos. Even without understanding Korean, one can feel the intense, tangible landscape. To further experience the depth of Silica Gel’s music, one must attend their live performances. Doors open on 10/25. The performance time and duration are subject to the event’s schedule.
