Zhou Chen’s solo exhibition ‘Shi Dai Yin Yi’ primarily continues the spirit of new ink painting and creative reinterpretation from the past two years. The works predominantly feature monochromatic expressions, with lines and shapes drawing inspiration from various natural elements. As Du Fu wrote in ‘Lang Shui Ge’: ‘What does the Jialing River resemble? Shi Dai and jade stones depend on each other.’ Here, ‘Shi Dai’ refers to the color ‘dark blue,’ a hue frequently used by Zhou Chen in his recent creations. ‘Yin Yi’ signifies integration, reinterpreting the ink color in ink paintings with the dark blue of oil paints. The exhibition aims to establish a fusion of contemporary ink spirit and oil colors, symbolizing a contemporary expression through the process of creative reinterpretation.
These works mainly continue the new ink spirit and creative reinterpretation from the past two years, with a focus on monochromatic expressions. The lines and shapes in the paintings are inspired by various elements of nature, such as mountains, waterfalls, strange rocks, flowers and birds, the vast sky, and mottled traces, etc. During the creative process, techniques such as scraping, smearing, washing, brushing, and dyeing are applied without restriction, providing nourishment and composition to the works. The creative process is like an unknown adventure journey, with a rhythm that is sometimes fast and sometimes slow, sometimes paused and stagnant, and sometimes rapidly changing, all reflected on the canvas! Through the connection of contexts, the paintings present a myriad of landscapes, sometimes like mountains and rocks, sometimes like flowers and trees, appearing near and far. On the canvas, one can see the texture of past years, the fleeting changes of future spaces, and the pulse of the present! The exhibition is open from 10/19 to 12/24, with performance times and durations subject to the actual event.【Taipei, Taiwan】Zhou Chen Solo Exhibition: ‘Shi Dai Yin Yi’
