– Toru Hatsuta, a Japanese bamboo art artist with both history and fashion. He studied under Japanese bamboo art master Akira Tanaka, who was awarded the “Purple Ribbon” medal by the emperor. In the traditional bamboo craft field, Toru Hatsuta accurately cuts and polishes century-old bamboo with the aesthetic sense of contemporary art. Featuring the flexible curves of bamboo, he brings a new modern look to “#bamboo”. His works are collected by national-level art galleries, such as the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia. He has rich exhibition experience in Japan and China. In 2019, he participated in “Floral Art of DANIEL OST” held by Belgian floral artist Daniel Ost, who is used for the royal wedding, at Meiji Shrine, showing the beauty of the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. In 2010 and 2011, he was selected for the largest publicly recruited exhibition of Japanese traditional crafts, the eastern division of the “Japanese Traditional Arts and Crafts Exhibition”.
– ⁞ Traces of time – Two-hundred-year-old smoked old bamboo. Toru Hatsuta often uses old bamboo from old Japanese houses in the Edo period in his works. After years of smoking, it forms a warm brown luster. Because of the different smoking positions, each one presents a unique appearance. The two-hundred-year formation process and its increasing scarcity make the Japanese regard it as a precious antique. There are forms given by time on the bamboo. Through Toru Hatsuta’s creation, history is further extended.
– ⁞ Let old things be reborn – Chasaku. Chasaku is the “fairy medium” in the tea ceremony, used to appreciate the beauty of tea leaves and smell the delicate fragrance of tea. As the carrier of tea leaves, it reflects the curve of bamboo itself. Therefore, the materials that can be used are very rare and need to be selected with a keen eye. The volume of chasaku further highlights the unique thickness and unevenness of each bamboo. Toru Hatsuta makes active use of the original natural traces in his creations and transforms them into the charm of his works. He creates with the mentality of transforming traditions and superimposes exquisite techniques such as cutting, polishing, and painting on each work.
Elegant shapes showcase contemporary trends, contrasting with the warm luster of age, forming a unique style of bamboo ware.
Japanese bamboo weaving transformed from practical items to art in the late 19th century, emphasizing ‘form’ to highlight the essence of the material, with more abstract and free forms. The distinctive style has recently shone brightly in the world of crafts, remaining in high demand despite high prices. Tetsu Hatada conveys the sensations of the body in nature to the bamboo, depicting the imagination of tea and flower arrangement through weaving. He places special emphasis on the balance of tea utensils, skillfully using his understanding of bamboo materials, employing different bamboo weaves with a sense of depth, maintaining delicacy while ensuring structural strength, and using decorative techniques such as dyeing and lacquering to present elegant tea cages. Flower vessels, on the other hand, express the vigorous growth of plants and the vitality of spring in daily life. Through bamboo creation, he recreates the life of bamboo, hoping that his works can also enter the lives of viewers, allowing them to enjoy beautiful moments with tea and flowers. The exhibition is open from 11/23 to 12/15, with specific business hours subject to daily opening conditions.
