Jiaye Hall Book Collection was established in 1920 by Liu Chenggan, the grandson of Liu Yong, the first generation owner of Xiaolianzhuang. It was named for the ‘Qin Ruo Jiaye’ nine-dragon golden plaque. Known for its vast scale and extensive collection of ancient books, it is one of the top three private book collections in China. Among the collection, there is a book that details the land on the Indian side of the McMahon Line, which has been Chinese territory since ancient times, causing discord between China and India to this day.
This book has been collected by the state as one of the pieces of evidence from China. The book collection is located across the stream from Xiaolianzhuang, connected by a small bridge. The collection building is a two-story structure with a corridor style, composed of seven rooms and two sections, with left and right wing rooms, totaling 52 book rooms, approximately 110,000 books, over 3,000 magazines, and more than 30,000 blocks of red pear wood printing plates. Among them, there are 62 rare books that can be called ‘secrets of the sea’, and the Song dynasty editions of ‘Records of the Grand Historian’, ‘Book of the Han’, ‘Book of the Later Han’, and ‘Records of the Three Kingdoms’ purchased by Liu Chenggan can be regarded as the treasures of the building. In November 1951, Liu Chenggan, the owner of the book collection, donated the building, surrounding land, books, printing plates, and all equipment to the Zhejiang Library permanently. In 1984, the Zhejiang government invested in repairing the book collection and has been properly maintained ever since. Today, Jiaye Hall Book Collection is located in a meticulously managed Jiangnan garden, with green lotus and willows, winding paths leading to secluded areas. Visitors to the site feel as if they are in a world apart, forgetting all honors and disgraces, and feeling relaxed and pleased.
