Xujiahui Catholic Church is located next to the bustling Xujiahui commercial area. Its red brick walls and two towering bell towers make this medieval Gothic architectural masterpiece, with a history of hundreds of years, particularly eye-catching. The simple external design and magnificent interior decoration carry a strong religious atmosphere, where you can also experience a rare tranquility amidst the city.
The church’s external window frames and eaves are edged with granite, and the roof is paved with graphite tiles, adorned with many stone carvings of saints and the Holy Father, creating a solemn atmosphere. Every night, the church is especially charming under the external lighting. Inside, the church is even more magnificent, supported by 64 columns, with a grand altar from Paris in 1919 at the center, and a vast space that can accommodate nearly three thousand people for Mass at the same time; the pointed arched doors and windows are embedded with colorful glass, and sunlight refracts into a colorful light and shadow inside the church when it passes through, which is very beautiful. This church, built by the French Jesuits, is also known as ‘St. Ignatius Cathedral’, and is one of the larger Catholic churches in the Shanghai area.
